Ventura County AIDS Partnership | Latino Task Force

Project Description

Latinos represent 34% of the Ventura County population; yet in 2005 Latinos represent 60% of new AIDS cases according to the Ventura County Public Health’s HIV Surveillance Report 2005.

VCAP is addressing this disparity by facilitating a countywide Taskforce consisting of Latino leaders from the agricultural, business, public health, and non-profit sectors, the faith-based community, the school system and other key stakeholders. The Taskforce will identify and prioritize cultural, social and environmental factors that put Latinos at risk for HIV. Through community organizing and advocacy, the project aims to prevent HIV infection by change norms and physical environments.

We are currently completing an information gathering and planning phase. Look for more details on the Taskforce’s programs early Fall 2007

Taskforce Funding
The HIV/AIDS Latino Taskforce is made possible by:

1. The HIV/AIDS Latino Taskforce is made possible via a three-year, $120,000 grant from The California Endowment’s Community Health and Elimination of Health Disparities program. The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation, was established in 1996 to expand access to affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians. The Endowment makes grants to organizations and institutions that directly benefit the health and well-being of the people of California. For more information, visit The Endowment's Web site at www.calendow.org.
2. $10,000 from Kaiser Permanente’s Valley Service Area HIV Grants Program.
3. $1000 The Gas Company

Taskforce Members
The Taskforce is comprised of about 20 diverse individuals from various sectors, representing a multitude of talents. It’s a dynamic, energetic group committed to making a difference. Some are local experts in HIV prevention and patient care. Many are new to HIV prevention, but realize the need for culturally appropriate, language sensitive interventions for Ventura County’s Latino population. We deeply appreciate the hard work and talents of this volunteer group.
